Reading/read:
The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevski: interrupted midway at the beginning of the term; loving it nonetheless.
Wutering Heights by Emily Brontë: I had read this one last year and was kind of disappointed; had to read it again for college and, after dissecting the whole book, it's become one of my favourites.
Dracula by Bram Stoker: who could tell the father of all vampire clichés (granted, they already existed as folklore upon which the novel was based) would be so interesting! Though everything's better with Freudian subtext interwoven throughout the whole story.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, a play by Tennessee Williams: never, ever thought I'd love the work of a playwright so much! His broken characters are so fascinating.
M. Butterfly, a play by David Hwang: a brilliant take on gender roles and Western views about the East, which had a special signficance to someone (like me) who grew up with the otaku-weeaboo culture with all its effeminate bishies and retarded moe.
The Yellow Wallpaper, a short story by Charllotte Perkins Gilman: now one of my favourite short stories.
A Streetcar Named Desire, by Tennessee Williams: I'm getting fond of his disrupt, escapist, weak characters such as Blanche.
The Silent Cry by Kenzaburo Oe: I haven't even gone past the first chapter yet, but I loved the style. It has a raw strength in the words which renders a desolating effect on the reader.
Wanting to read:
The God of Small Things, by Arundathi Roy: found out about it in English class; got really interested; just bought it. Seems very promising.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass: I've been wanting to read these again with my grownup mind (I was ten, eleven when I first read them
The Remains of the Day, by Kazuo Ishiguro: one of my favourite films, I just have to know the origin of it!
Etc.
I love fiction just as I love drawing (maybe just a little less). Degrading morals, dysfunctional families, challenged gender roles, society's hypocrisies, weak and failing characters: such themes are as delectable to my imagination as chocolate to my palate. I hope to be able to achieve these effects on my own story.
.........
Well, if you people have read the whole thing till now, either you're a nerd like me or you have a lot of patience! 8D
So tell me, what are your favourite books/works of fiction?
